writing three original songs, BBYC Gala performance before 150+ attendees, one participant sponsored into mentor training
Impact:
Throughout 2025, Bongil Bongil Youth Creators is providing consistent, positive creative pathways for Aboriginal students from Toormina High School and the Coffs Harbour Learning Centre. Weekly songwriting, studio and DJ sessions help participants tell their stories, celebrate places they love on Gumbaynggirr Country, and develop practical skills in recording, arrangement, live performance and crowd engagement. Ongoing cultural mentoring with Kev Dumas and Angus Field (3%) deepens cultural connection, alongside a didgeridoo-making project that blends traditional knowledge with contemporary music practice. So far, the group has written three original songs and delivered a high-energy set at the BBYC Gala before an audience of more than 150 community members. One young person is currently sponsored for mentor training, building leadership capacity within the group. Participants report growing confidence, stronger school engagement and pride in sharing culture through music—with more tracks, DJ sets and performances on the way as the programme continues.
